According to Ukrainian newspaper Fakty i Kommentarii  (September 9, 2011), residents of the Odessa and Nikolayev regions (oblast’ is translated as region or province) witnessed unusual phenomenon several days ago. No credible explanation has been presented (so far, the explanations include a UFO; crashed American satellite; meteorite, bolide…). Rumors about ball lighting and an explosion at a Ukrainian nuclear power station proved to be wrong.  

According to the eyewitnesses, not far from the Nikolayev administrative regional border with Odessa region  (south-west of Ukraine), a “fiery sphere” fell on the ground; an explosion ensued, followed by a powerful ground tremor. There were dozens of witnesses. They observed a sphere, bright as the Sun, with a long, radiant tail. It is not known what the object was; most of the observers had never seen anything similar. Some believe it was a meteorite; most claim that it was a UFO crash. The eyewitnesses state that the “sphere fell to the ground in a spiral trajectory”. The anomalous phenomenon was clearly perceived by denizens of adjacent villages in the area of 20 to 30 kilometers. They report a powerful, deafening explosion that took place in the evening hours, day-like brightness and wild reaction of domestic animals thereafter. It was a huge, strange, radiant sphere, with a fiery tail (or train). The object flew towards Sofiyevka Village. Villagers in Nikolayevka and Nonopavlovka villages described a gigantic sphere racing through the night sky, and disappearing behind hills. Then there was a powerful explosion. Rumors have it that there were two objects.
